Laughing Gas

Paediatric dentists are extensively trained to care for and understand the needs of infants, children and adolescents. Most children cope well with treatment in the chair at our dental clinic.

However, there are situations when your child may feel quite anxious before dental treatment. Based on your child’s age, level of anxiety, type of treatment required and the length of the appointment, we will recommend whether sedation with laughing gas will be beneficial for your child. On the day of your consultation, we will explain to you and your child what to expect at the next visit.

What Are the Benefits of Using Laughing Gas for Your Child’s Dental Visits?

Laughing gas is safe and effective for most children, making dental care simple and straightforward. Here are some of the other benefits laughing gas offers our young patients.
Minimal Side Effects
Laughing gas leaves your child with little to no lingering side effects.
Comfortable Treatment
Treatment is straightforward and more relaxed, especially for anxious patients.
Reduces Anxiety
Laughing gas induces feelings of ease and euphoria, reducing fearful feelings.
Remain Responsive
Your child is awake and responsive throughout treatment with laughing gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is one of the safest forms of sedation available in paediatric dentistry. At Paediatric Dental Home, our specialist paediatric dentists at both our Hoppers Crossing and Geelong practices regularly use this gentle sedation method to help anxious children relax during dental procedures.

The safety profile of laughing gas is well-established, with decades of research supporting its use in children. It's classified as minimal sedation, meaning your child remains fully conscious and maintains all protective reflexes throughout treatment. The gas is mixed with oxygen and administered through a small, comfortable nose mask that allows your child to breathe normally.

How Does Laughing Gas Benefit Your Child?

One of the key benefits of laughing gas is that it works quickly, typically within minutes, and wears off just as rapidly once the mask is removed. This means there are no lingering after-effects, and your child can return to normal activities immediately after the appointment.

Our paediatric specialists are extensively trained in administering laughing gas and will carefully monitor your child throughout the procedure. The dosage can be precisely adjusted to achieve just the right level of relaxation while ensuring your child remains responsive and cooperative.

While most children tolerate laughing gas extremely well, we always conduct a thorough medical history review before recommending it. Children with certain respiratory conditions or specific medical concerns may be better suited to alternative comfort measures, which our team can discuss with you.

The use of laughing gas often helps children develop positive associations with dental visits, as they experience comfort and sometimes a pleasant tingling sensation or feeling of warmth rather than anxiety. Many children leave their appointments with no memory of any discomfort.

What Is Laughing Gas?

Laughing gas is a mixture of two gases—oxygen and nitrous oxide. It is effective and probably the safest sedative used in dentistry. We administer laughing gas through a mask placed on the child’s nose throughout the procedure.

Your child will experience a relaxed state, their fingers or toes may feel tingly and some children giggle and laugh during the procedure. Your child will be awake the whole time. At the end of treatment, breathing oxygen eliminates the gas and the laughing gas has no lingering effects.

Will Laughing Gas Work For All Children?

We understand that every child’s needs are unique, and we strive to tailor a plan that suits your child's specific treatment needs. This form of sedation may not be effective for some children, especially those who experience severe anxiety, nasal congestion, or those who find having a mask on the nose very restrictive. We will offer alternative treatment options if laughing gas is unsuitable for your child.

Contact our Geelong and Hoppers Crossing paediatric dental clinics for more information on how laughing gas can help your child get the dentistry they need.
