White Fillings

‘White fillings’ is the common name for composite glass ionomer fillings. We use white fillings to restore primary and adult teeth. We may recommend white fillings if your child’s teeth are decayed or chipped. We custom-blend the material to ensure that the filling matches the natural shade of your child’s teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our specialist paediatric dentists may recommend dental crowns for children in several specific situations where conventional fillings aren't sufficient.

Understanding Dental Crowns in Geelong

Dental crowns are often recommended when a primary (baby) tooth has extensive decay that affects multiple surfaces or a large portion of the tooth. While we always aim to use the most conservative treatment possible, sometimes a crown provides better protection and durability for a severely damaged tooth that still needs to remain in place for several years.

For children who have undergone pulp therapy (similar to a root canal in adults), a crown is typically necessary to protect the remaining tooth structure. Without this reinforcement, the tooth becomes brittle and susceptible to fracture during normal chewing and biting.

Children with developmental defects of their enamel may benefit from crowns to protect teeth that are naturally weaker or more prone to decay. Similarly, teeth that are fractured due to trauma often require crowns to restore both function and appearance.

For children at high risk of dental caries, particularly those with special needs or medical conditions that make oral hygiene challenging, crowns may be a preventive measure for teeth at significant risk of decay.

Dental Crowns in Hoppers Crossing for Your Child's Needs

At our practices, we typically use stainless steel crowns for back teeth due to their exceptional durability and reliability. For front teeth where aesthetics are important, we offer tooth-coloured options.

The decision to place a crown is always made in consultation with parents after a thorough examination and discussion of all available options. We consider factors such as the child's age, cooperation level, remaining development time of the affected tooth and overall oral health needs.

While crowns require more extensive preparation than fillings, they often represent the most cost-effective and successful long-term solution for severely compromised primary teeth, helping to maintain proper spacing for permanent teeth and supporting healthy oral development.

Stainless Steel Crowns

When molar teeth are affected by hypomineralisation or ‘chalky teeth,’ extensive decay or following a baby tooth root canal, we recommend stainless steel crowns.

These are NOT the same as silver amalgam fillings. We often refer to these special caps as ‘Iron Man' caps. They are cemented to protect the teeth until the baby teeth naturally fall out.

Pulp Treatment (Baby Tooth Root Canal)

Sometimes, a cavity can be so deep that it affects the nerve of the baby tooth. After making a diagnosis we will recommend the appropriate treatment for the tooth. On occasion, we may need to perform a ‘pulpotomy’ or ‘pulpectomy’ to restore the tooth. After we have completed the pulp treatment, we place a crown over the tooth.

Space Maintainers

Our primary goal is to save teeth, but sometimes an extraction is needed as a last resort. This typically occurs when the tooth is infected or severely damaged. If baby teeth are removed prematurely, adult teeth can drift into the spaces. This may result in crooked teeth in the future and necessitate orthodontic treatment.

We use a space maintainer to prevent these molar teeth from shifting. We will discuss with you whether a space maintainer is suitable for your child. The space maintainer will remain in place until the new tooth begins to erupt into the space created after the extraction. We will remove the space maintainer as required and recommend regular dental visits to monitor the space maintainer and the eruption of the new tooth into the space.

Hypomineralised or ‘Chalky’ Teeth

It is not uncommon for some children’s teeth to be affected by hypomineralisation.

Simply put, the teeth have white, yellow or brown marks and appear ‘chalky’. These marks can be present on some teeth and have various causes. These teeth can also be sensitive and more susceptible to chipping.

Sometimes, white marks on teeth indicate the beginning of dental decay, and teeth that have been knocked may also show discolouration. This is why we need to examine these ‘chalky’ teeth and advise on any necessary treatment.
